New Game New Rules
We are witnesses to a unique time in history. Australia’s key national security partner, America, is rapidly losing its authority, credibility, legitimacy and standing. While there are challenges, Australian democracy continues to thrive enabled by the compulsory and preferential voting, separation of powers and strong institutions. In contrast, America, with failed leadership at presidential and cabinet level, and the decline in public ethics and morality, is creating an environment where anarchy and autocracy are thriving.
So, what can Australia learn from the implosion of America under Trump. Do we continue to support our security partner and its constant threats of annihilation of countries and use of nuclear weapons? Or should we strengthen the interlocking sets of rules that underpin prosperity, security and stability?
Allan Behm, Advisor of The Australia Institute’s International & Security Affairs Program will discuss these, and many other questions raised by the decline of America, at Newcastle Institute’s August event on August 12th, 2026 at Newcastle Yacht Club between 6.00pm and 7.30pm.
Following a career spanning nearly thirty years in the Australian Public Service, Allan was Chief of Staff to Minister for Climate Change and Industry Greg Combet and senior advisor to the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Penny Wong.
Instead of continued kowtowing to America, Allan recommends sustained diplomacy as the investment most likely to deliver long-term benefit. In 1945, Evatt was a key negotiator in the creation of the UN Charter in 1945. In a world, where there America continually ignores the international rules-based order, Allan will challenge us to consider the need for new rules and for Australia to take a leadership role in their formation.
