Australia’s political landscape is changing. Across the country, voters are increasingly turning away from the major parties and towards independent candidates who promise to put their communities—and their constituents—first. But what is driving this shift? Is it simply dissatisfaction with the major parties, or does it represent something deeper: a fundamental change in the way Australians want to be represented?
The rise of independents has already changed the balance of power in parliaments across Australia. In NSW, a growing crossbench has demonstrated that independents can play a decisive role in shaping legislation, holding governments to account and influencing policy.
Greg Piper, the long-serving Independent Member for Lake Macquarie, and Alex Greenwich, Independent Member for Sydney, have both experienced first-hand the opportunities—and challenges—of working outside the traditional party system. They will join Dr Ross Kerridge, former independent Lord Mayor for Newcastle at our September event on 9th September 2026 at Newcastle Yacht Club between 6.00pm and 7.30pm.
So, what does the rise of the independents mean for the future of Australian politics? Does greater independence bring governments closer to their communities—or make governing more difficult? Can independents deliver meaningful change without the machinery and resources of the major parties? And are we witnessing a temporary political trend or the emergence of a new model of representation?
Our panel will discuss these and other questions as they explore the changing role of independents, the shifting expectations of Australian voters and what this growing political movement could mean for the future of our democracy.
