The question of who will win the 2024 US election has been dominating the media for months, made more intense by the nomination of Kamala Harris as the Democrats nominee. The results of the election may be known within days of 5th November, but questions will continue based on not just who wins but the margin of victory.
The world bore witness to the scenes of January 6th 2021, when Trump supporters stormed the Capital, refusing to accept the results of the election. If Harris wins, especially by a small margin, will American institutions and democratic processes be able to withstand the challenges from Trump and Republicans? If Trump wins will America and the institutions which are the pillars of their democracy survive?
These questions and others will be discussed at the Newcastle Institute’s November meeting (Wednesday, 13thNovember 2024 6.00pm – 7.30pm), when Professor Michael Ondaatje, Professor of History, at Griffith University considers the results of the US election. Michael, a life member of the Newcastle Institute will discuss the question of America: What Now? through the lens of US political history.
In the event of a Harris victory, Trump, and the Republicans have already set in train different legal mechanisms for challenging the validity of some citizens’ votes and potentially those of the Electoral College. Michael will also consider the stability of the US democracy if Trump wins in November, and the potential changes he may make to institutions and democratic processes which have served the US for centuries.
When: Wednesday, 13th November 2024 6.00pm – 7.30pm
Where: Souths Merewether, Llewellyn St Merewether
