The future of higher education in Australia

Education has intrinsic value for society and contributes significantly to economic growth and productivity. In contrast to the value of higher education assigned in the Whitlam era, universities in Australia today have become corporatised, adopting a competitive business model with high dependence on overseas students for revenue. Have these changes come at the expense of quality education tailored to the current and future needs of our communities?

At our July event (July 9th, 2025) Dr Sally Patfield and Professor Stefanie Schurer will explore the future of higher education in Australia. Dr Patfield, Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Newcastle, will discuss how perceptions of the value of university education have changed over time. Professor Schurer, Professor of Economics at the University of Sydney will examine the broader benefits and discuss the importance of strong universities for economic growth and productivity in Australia.

We have recently witnessed political intervention into universities in the United States. Is there a risk this may happen here? Influenced by government policies, some universities in Australia have dropped many of their arts programs to favour job-ready degrees in sciences. Have we lost sight of the value of universities to Australian life? Our speakers will discuss these important questions on the future of higher education.
