The Housing Crisis: Challenges and Innovative Solutions

The housing crisis has many faces: increasing demand for a limited supply of rental properties and for social housing; increasing homelessness evidenced by rough sleeping, couch surfing and sleeping in cars; and housing and rental prices out of reach of many in our community

The Newcastle Institute will examine the housing crisis  challenges and discuss innovative solutions beyond the traditional government funded social housing at the August Meeting on Wednesday 10th August, 6.00-7.30pm at Souths Leagues Club  Llewellyn St Merewether.

 Our speakers will include

  • Nicole Grgas , the Coordinator at Hunter Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service who will describe the face of the housing crisis and the challenges faced in our community.
  • Dr Sidsel Grimstad, Senior Lecturer at Newcastle Business School at University of Newcastle  who will examine other models beyond social housing successfully used in other countries with a focus on cooperative housing.
  • Professor David Adamson Group Chief Strategic Engagement, Home in Place will discuss the current policy failure and potential solutions to the housing crisis
