Valuing our thriving Art scene

Newcastle is a creative hub in NSW with more artists per capita than any Australian city, many private art galleries and a thriving performance arts scene. The Newcastle Art Gallery reopens in late September. What opportunities will accrue from the reopening of our gallery? How can we value and strengthen our arts scene in the region?

At our September event, (10th September 2025) three key people in the local arts scene will discuss the diversity of cultural activity and explore potential opportunities for our region from the reopening of Newcastle Art Gallery.

Prue Viggers O.A.M, is President of the Newcastle Art Gallery Society and has worked tirelessly in various capacities to contribute to the realisation of its redevelopment.

Braddon Snape is a nationally recognised Newcastle based artist with a practice that encompasses sculpture and installation in a diverse range of media. He is also the Director of the Newcastle artist studio and gallery initiative The Creator Incubator.

Dino Consalvo is an artist, with exhibitions across Australia, who lives and works in Newcastle and is co-director of Straitjacket gallery.

In addition to the societal benefits from arts, in 2022-23 cultural and creative activity contributed $63.7 billion to Australia’s economy. In the Hunter, the creative industries add over $967 million to the gross regional product annually. Our speakers will discuss celebrate our diverse arts scene and explore opportunities to strengthen the value it brings to our community.
