How much do companies know about you?

Businesses track everything we do online with limited options for opting out of your data being used or sold. Every time you interact with a website or click on social media, data is collected about you. These data guide the algorithms used by companies to understand your online behaviours. The use of our data raises many questions about privacy and the gathering and exchange of information. Legislative and policy frameworks for data privacy in Australia have lagged behind technological advances and are not focused on protecting consumer privacy.

When you click I agree on a website or on social media, you could be granting companies permanent permission to use your data for their own purposes, or they can on sell it to other companies. In most instances if you want to use the website you have to tick I agree or access will be denied.

At the Newcastle Institute’s August meeting (Wednesday, 11th September 2024 6.00pm – 7.30pm), Jacob Moran will explore and explain what companies know about you and what they can do with that information. Jacob will share practical examples of how some common websites track you and how they share that information.

Jacob is a graduate of the University of Newcastle and is a recognised data analytics expert with experience in government, private enterprise and his own business. He is currently working on a major project that explores the nexus between customer privacy and business needs and how to prevent another Optus or Medibank data breach.
